We’ve all been there – you’re white water rafting and it hits you… you could really use an espresso. You look left, you look right, but there’s no baristas because (obviously) you’re on a river. Well, unless you’re rafting with me, because as the Vancouver Coffee Snob, I can a create you a shot of the finest java in no time at all, with my Wacaco Minipresso.
Jokes aside, the Minipresso is a fantastically impressive little gadget that allows you to create a pretty damn good imitation of a machine espresso, wherever you are, as long as you have hot water.
The device stands just 190cm high and weighs just 350 grams, making it portable enough to fit in a handbag if needed. To create a shot of espresso you simply unscrew the water reservoir, fill it with hot water, add a Nespresso pod, screw the whole thing together and repeatedly push the arm on the side. With a little bit of work, the pressure builds up, forces the water through the coffee grounds, and the resulting drink spits out of the other end.
Now I’m a true coffee snob, so I went into this expecting the results to be far, far worse than my horrendously expensive coffee machine at home. But I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised at how good the espresso was. Pro tip: you get out of it what you put into it, so don’t be stingy on the Nespresso pods; buy the best you can find, or better yet buy a reusable one and grind beans fresh.
Overall, this is the best solution on the market for espresso on the go. It’s small, light, designed well, and whilst it’ll never compare to your favorite coffee shop, it produces a great drink that had no business being available in a raft on a river. No serious travelling espresso fan should be without one of these.
The best part? You can win one of these Wacaco Minipressos for yourself.
