If there's one thing we can all agree on about 2016, amidst the horrors of electoral turmoil and every good celebrity dying, it's that Airbnb had a pretty damn good year. Their City Hosts program has seen them expand into engaging, curated local tours, and they've held a ton of genuinely cool contests (a stay in Dracula's Castle, anyone? A night at London's Abbey Road Studios?).
But, back to basics, no one does quirky, unique accommodation like Airbnb. In honor of this, here are 10 of the most bucket list-worthy from around the globe. Make checking them out your new year's resolution.
The Seashell House, Mexico
Whether or not you're a fan of The Little Mermaid, this Airbnb is unlikely to disappoint. Built in 1994 and located in the beautiful Isla Mujeres, literally everything is shell-themed here, from the shower head to bathroom taps. Not only do guests have their own private pool, but the ocean views are simply dreamy. If it's sold out (it is extremely popular), check out one of these killer Mexican resorts instead.
Moderne Apartment, Iceland
Iceland is one of the trendiest destinations this year, and its awe-inspiring natural wonders aren't going anywhere in 2017. After checking out the hip capital of Reykjavik head to this stunning, spacious Airbnb in Vaðlaheiði, a 10 minute drive from Northern Iceland's liveliest city. The interior is as chic and minimalist (read: Nordic) as you'd expect, and the activities on offer are endless. Yes, we're talking hiking, horseback riding, kayaking, and, season-dependent, skiing, snowshoeing and ice fishing.
Sunrise House, Indonesia
Bali has so much going for it we're not going to bother listing the island paradise's attractions, but there's no doubt this all-bamboo villa is worthy of both a mention and stay. Situated 25 minutes from Ubud, it's quite literally a fantastical work of art – like something the luckiest kid in the world dreamt up, then created. Guests should take advantage of the plunge pool that's literally perched on the edge of the river valley, before requesting the on-demand Balinese chef to cater a private meal.
Hector Cave House, Greece
Very little in life beats the picture-perfect views of Greece's island gem, Santorini. Based in the small town of Oia, this Airbnb was literally carved into a cliff 250 years ago, and has the sweetest sea views to compliment it. The interior is super cool and oh so Greek, whilst the private veranda comes complete with a two-person jacuzzi and an adorable seating area. Just nearby lies a ton of cozy cafes, seaside restaurants, and some must-see Byzantine castle ruins.
Casa Ventanas, Belize
When you think over-water bungalows you likely think of the Maldives over Central America, but hit up Belize and you'll find one of the coolest floating Airbnbs around. This one-bedroom bungalow even has a glass panel for viewing the tropical sea-life below it, in addition to modern styling, wifi (obv), and a wraparound deck with an extended pier. From this pier you should totally take the plunge – a sailboat, kayaks, and snorkel equipment are all at your disposal on this dream hideaway.
Dreamy Tropical Tree House, Hawaii, America
We're quite sure we've found the prettiest treehouse around, thanks to this Airbnb. Located on Hawaii's Big Island, 10 miles from Volcano National Park, this gem lets you sleep amid the rainforest canopy. And though it's located completely off the grid and was created with sustainable materials, it still manages to feel magnificently luxurious. This might be because of the Pinterest-worthy decor, or it might just be because there's nothing more intimate than a one-bedroom escape in the treetops.
Villa Kishti, Anguilla, Caribbean
Le's be real, when are we not fantasizing about the Caribbean? If you feel similarly, check out Villa Kishti, perched prettily on a hill above Anguilla's rocky shoreline. The Asian-style villa offers sublime ocean views from three of its four bedroom suites, and also features a ginormous infinity pool and grotto with a giant hot tub. The sleek design of the spa-like property spells relaxation and seclusion for groups looking for the most Snapchat-worthy getaway around. Yeah, did we mention it sleeps 10?
ElquiDomos Astronomic Hotel, Chile
Elqui Domos is the first and only astronomic hotel in the southern hemisphere, and if that isn't reason enough to book a flight to Chile, we don't know what is. Located near La Serena, a coastal city in the north, this cluster of seven geodesic (read: igloo-like) cabins have detachable roofs made for stargazing. If watching the stars from bed wasn't unique enough, the activities on offer range from night-time horse rides, to massages and tarot sessions, to bike and car rentals.
Off-grid itHouse, California, America
If you've always fanciest living off-grid in the middle of California's High Desert, then look no further than this beauty of a house. Fully powered by solar panels, the Airbnb has to be one of the most modern-looking around. Super peaceful and remote, it offers vistas in literally all directions, as well as proximity to Joshua Tree National Park and the super intriguing Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum.

Secluded Intown Treehouse, Georgia, America
Just minutes from downtown Atlanta, yet worlds away in the trees, this treehouse is as magical as they come. Consisting of three separate rooms that are connected by rope bridges, this urban retreat is so in-demand it's known as Airbnb's most wished-for listing worldwide. The living room is full of antique furnishings and overlooks an acre of lush woods, whilst the bedroom has a literal bed with wheels, so it can be rolled onto a platform overlooking the stream below.
