Despite previous research suggesting it would only be a matter of time before travel agents would be more or less extinct, today's reality shows something quite different. Not only do travel agents still very much exist, the profession itself is thriving - just not necessarily in brick and mortar stores.
Virtuoso is a network of the best luxury travel agencies with more than 15,200 advisors worldwide who recently reported increased interest and business, particularly from millennial travelers. Between 2012 and 2016, the number of millennial clients among Virtuoso agencies increased from 9 to 13 percent, making them its fastest group of growing clients.
The '2017 Portrait of American Travelers' by MMGY Global backed up these findings, with their research showing 33 percent of millennial respondents saying they intend to utilize the services of a travel agent over the next two years — that’s twice as many as Gen Xers (17 percent) and Baby Boomers (18 percent). The 'How America Travels' national study from the American Society of Travel Agents added that a healthy 44 percent of millennial respondents said that using an agent is “worth it.”
And researchers say that as millennials get older and make more expendable income, their desire to travel will increase further. Could travel agents finally be making a comeback?
