Uber has quickly become one of the fastest growing transportation concepts, employing thousands of people all over the world. It comes as no surprise, then, that the company is looking to become innovative leaders in transportation by rethinking the impossible: vertical, short distance travel.
Like something out of a sci-fi movie, Uber is dreaming up a car-like device that focuses on vertical-takeoff and landing (VTOL) technology. Basically, a “cab” that could avoid all traffic congestion by airlifting it’s passengers above traffic and landing at the destination. According to The Huffington Post UK, Uber hopes to one day eliminate personal car ownership altogether.
Uber has even gone so far as to mention that they would like to make the hovering cars autonomous, or self-driving. With a fleet of self-driving cars already put into motion by Uber in Pittsburgh this past August, the company is looking up (literally).
Although just a concept for the time being, we have seen Uber act on their innovative ideas before. Perhaps most daunting is the idea of getting air traffic control approved in a regulatory way. Uber may have some bridges to cross before you can expect to hail a flying car, but in the meantime, we can dream.
