Sure, the heat in LA is nothing new, and with summers infamous for being long and hot, the excessive rays can be tiring. But considering we've just broken a 131-year-old record with a blistering temperature of 110 degrees, we've got a little more incentive than usual to seek out creative ways of cooling down. Yes, you could always crack open a fire hydrant or set up a kiddie-pool in your living room (kidding, but not really) but we're not going to let it come to that. Instead, check out the following creative ways to beat the heat.
Brian's Shave Ice
What better way to cool off than with shave ice? The make-your-own shave ice menu at Brian's allows you to choose from an extensive list of fillings, flavours, and toppings that all make for a colourful and chilled-out experience for your taste buds. If you're not feeling shave ice, try one of their milk tea, slush, or fruit-flavoured bobas for an equally satisfying dessert. If our mouths weren't so dry from the heat, we'd be drooling already.
Raging Waters Water Park
Raging Waters is without a doubt one of Southern California's best and most popular water parks, and for good reason. With dozens of rides, slides, waves and pools, this is by far one of the best spots in the city to cool off. The San Dimas location is conveniently located only 30 minutes from downtown Los Angeles, and offers various dining options like Carl's Jr., Sharkey's and Jamba Juice. We recommend renting out a private cabana for the day when you've had enough of the water and want to enjoy some down time in the shade.
Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams
Jeni's is LA's resident scoop shop for every ice cream enthusiast's summer cravings. Since its inception in 2002, this little shop has paved the way for the rise of artisanal ice cream. Choose from a range of flavours, from Roasted Strawberry Buttermilk to Bourbon Salted Pecan, or try one of their delicious ice cream sandwiches. Better yet, Jeni's doesn't use any synthetic flavourings, dyes, or off-the-shelf mixings. That means that if the heat doesn't stop, neither do you.
Malibu Creek Rock Pool
Malibu Creek State Park might be an hour and a half out of DTLA, but it's well worth the trek. And take that literally — you can only get to the rock pool within via a 2.5-mile roundtrip hike. But the scenic boulders and refreshing waters make for a gorgeous afternoon. Sunbathe, then cool off with a dip in the water. The rock pool's made for it.
Wet Deck at the W Hotel
A rooftop pool with a panoramic view of Los Angeles and Hollywood? Yes, please. Cool off by taking a dip in the water, lay back in a complimentary lounge chair, or sip on a cocktail in a private luxury cabana - the choice is yours. Getting wet is optional, but relaxation and good times are guaranteed.
Popshop pops are your new go-to summer treat. Handmade with organic sugar and seasonal farmers' market produce, these vegan pops are made sans preservatives, dyes, and dairy. Amaretto white peach, Lavender Lemon, Lime Mint Mojito, Strawberry Lemonade... the list of flavours goes on. You can even suggest a new flavour on their Twitter page!
Or just daydream about that island life in Spain...
