In Los Angeles, “But First, Coffee” is a phrase often said, seen, and heard. Along with juice cleanses and spin classes, Angelinos will always make time for a good cup of coffee. And while this sprawling city has plenty of well-known cafes, many up-and-coming neighborhoods such as the Arts District and Fairfax are now home to the hippest and most Instagramable ones in the city. Behold:
Near the ‘hood of La Brea sits a coffee shop that resembles a trendy arts museum, with minimalist interiors complemented by loud furniture and Andy Warhol artwork. You really won’t be able to help yourself snapping a few pics inside Graffiti Sublime. A good study or work spot, this coffee shop serves pastries, coffee and tea in an ambience that is far from cookie cutter.
Tip: Order their 'Midnight Sister', a pricey but totally-worth-it dark chocolate mocha.
Another hipster gem in Downtown LA, Coffee Colab serves Suits & Knives Roasted Coffee in an environment that boasts both rock & roll and grunge vibes. Serving espresso drinks and pastries in a modern space, this spot also offers outdoor dog-friendly seating, making it a good spot to chill after roaming the artsy streets of DTLA with your pooch.
Tip: For smooth and tasty treat on a hot day, try the 'Bruce Lee Coffee', an iced Vietnamese variation.
Rubies + Diamonds
When you think of Hollywood, glitz and glamour come to mind, so it only makes sense that Rubies + Diamonds is located right on Sunset Blvd, near Hollywood’s Palladium. This modern coffee shop offers unique espresso drinks with light bites, including flavored cold brews (coconut & rose vanilla) and nitro coffees (with a smooth, dark finish). The interior is well lit by many chandeliers and offers a comfortable yet glamorous ambience with oversized chairs, sofas and glittering tables.
Tip: Try their 'Coconut Cream Sea Salt Latte' for a luxurious beverage that even non-vegans will enjoy.
It shouldn’t come to a surprise that this hidden spot is located in Downtown LA. Deep within the Arts District, sits a secretive and intimate coffee shop that offers a clear and no-nonsense menu. You won’t find any over the top lattes or pastries at GiorgiPiorgi, just plain good coffee in an ambience that resembles a concrete cave.
Tip: On a hot L.A. day, order their 'Shakerato', a beverage made of shaken espresso, milk and ice.
Right on Melrose Avenue, this trendy coffee shop has it all – white brick walls, delicious salads, colorful pastries and a #Hello mural that you can’t help but Instagram! Also important to note is that Carrera Café offers far from basic coffee — from lattes to tea, each cup of coffee is made to the utmost perfection. The vibe is clean but posh, making it a lovely spot to chill with a friend after a few hours of intense window-shopping on Melrose.
Tip: Ask at the counter to order a latte with “latte art” (it's hidden on the menu).
Located in the Arts District, Bulletproof Coffee is a unique cafe that offers cups of coffee made with MCT oil (think coconut oil) and butter. According to the founder of Bulletproof, the additional ingredients are meant to make you into a fat burning machine. Typical L.A., yes, but we still love it. The interior is minimal and quiet, and drinks are served in borosilicate glass beakers, putting the spotlight on their unique brews.
Tip: For an oldie but a goodie, order the sweet mocha coffee.
Located in Downtown Los Angeles, Impresso is like an unexpected breath of fresh air. Situated on “Health Row,” it neighbors a Pilates studio and a pedal studio, making for a great pick-me-up spot post sweaty workout sesh. The interior is casual yet chic, with wooden tables and serving platters, and pretty greenery sprawled across the walls. A great space for a catch-up, this coffee shop also offers pressed juice, pastries, and lunch options.
Tip: Get the French toast with their famous lavender latte. Just trust us.
