In the age of Girls , it’s easy to forget how groundbreaking a show like Sex and the City really was when it first aired. For the first time, women were speaking openly and unapologetically about sex and relationships, even if their lifestyles were slightly more aspirational than realistic. But even if it’s just for a day, anyone can live out their Sex and the City fantasies whether they’re a Samantha, a Miranda, a Charlotte, or a Carrie. Here at VIVA we've compiled a list of 7 iconic spots to recreate a day in the life of four of our most beloved New Yorkers.
Let’s start with the biggie. The Plaza Hotel was iconic even before Carrie ran into Big there after his engagement party. The Trump-owned luxury hotel and residences was featured in the children’s stories Eloise at the Plaza , in Home Alone 2 , and of course, it's where Katie and Hubble run into each other years after their breakup in The Way We Were . Carrie quits smoking for Aiden, so takes up cake instead, in a famous scene that made Magnolia Bakery one of the most visited cupcake shops in Manhattan, and arguably started our national obsession with cupcakes. If you want a local’s advice, however, the banana pudding is the best thing they sell there. The New York Public Library was one of Carrie’s favorite spots throughout the series, and is also the spot where she did not actually marry Big that day. There are various locations throughout the city, but the one you’re looking for is on 42nd street. Aidan and Steve’s bar, called Scout, does not actually exist. However, the bar used for filming does, and it is called O’Nieal’s in Little Italy. It’s actually a very cute spot with an extremely decent beer list. Steve made an ill-advised stop at Carrie and Big’s engagement party at this swanky Asian restaurant in the heart of the Meatpacking district. Do try the oxtail dumplings. Don’t try to apologize to your estranged spouse after you’ve cheated at her best friend’s engagement party. Thanks in some part to Sex and the City , Tao has become one of Manhattan’s most iconic restaurants. For the four ladies it was the place to go. It was also the scene of the world’s most uncomfortable double date with Carrie and her jazz musician and Big and his model. This is the spot where Charlotte first got her Samantha on, and purchased her first vibrator, the infamous Rabbit. These guys sell for around $100, but The Pleasure Chest sells all kinds of other naughty toys, from the small, unassuming bullet models to the shockingly large.
