the interior of New York's Mr. Cannon speakeasy bar

A brand new downtown speakeasy is the newest addition to New York's Seaport District. A mere 600 square-foot bar tucked into historic digs, Mr. Cannon encapsulates the nature of authentic speakeasies of yore but with an appealing, curated polish.

Finding it means heading to 206 Front Street, which at first glance appears to be a simple Rialto Jeans store. Walk past that and you'll see a historic sign for 206 Front Street, which references the location being built in the late 1790's, remodeled a century later. From there, follow down a nondescript alleyway, hang a left, and you'll reach a black door with nothing more than a small rat on the front. There you'll spot a doorbell to ring. Do that, and the powers that be can see you — but you can't see them. Luckily, entry is based on capacity, and if enough of the 25 seats are available, you'll be granted to go inside.

Enter through the hidden entrance and you'll be transported to an “underground” lounge decorated in dark colors and textures. This bespoke social club unites the past and present with old-school sensibilities and aesthetics, like the floral forward 1817 Martini with Grapefruit-infused Bombay Dry Gin, Dolin Dry Vermouth, Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur. Have a few of these and it may loosen your lips, but until then, consider this New York City's best kept secret.
